Barbados had a recorded breaking year in tourism. Long stay arrivals grew by 13.7 percent. There was a 25 percent increased of visitors from the US. One contributing factor for Barbados growth is greater availability of flights. In 2015, Delta introduces flights departing twice weekly from Atlanta and New York. Air Canada started flying their Boeing 777. The Boeing777 is a massive three cabin configuration that seats 458 passengers. To top off the availability of flights, Barbados is the first international destination to receive Jet Blue's mint service.
Jet Blue starting in April will be flying daily from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) to Barbados (BGI). Fort Lauderdale will be Jet Blue's third city with non-stop flights along with New York (JFK), and its latest Boston (BOS) which started in the fall of 2015. Beginning in March, Jet Blue will be changing its aircraft flying from JFK to an A321, which features 16 lie-flat seats.
Now you know the additional ways to get to Barbados, here's the hotspots to stay. When to go? Anytime is the right time to go to Barbados. One of their traditional celebrations is Tourism Week held annually in early December. It starts with a parade in Bridgetown, Barbados capital. There are events throughout the week. On Friday, there's a fish fry in Oistins, a parish on the south coast of Barbados where they know how to party. The beach is where they party. There's plenty of places to eat, craft booths to purchase souvenirs, and night clubs and bars. Saturday a concert is held in Independence Square.
When I was there, my wife and I made the newspapers. Our photograph was on the first page of the entertainment section of the Weekend Nation, Barbados leading newspaper. In Bridgetown, the photographer was taking pictures of the crowd. We stood out as having a great time. We stayed at The Club Barbados on the northwest coast of the island. Celebrities frequent that side. We were treated like celebrities after the hotel staff recognizes us from the newspaper. We had a wonderful time. In fact, Barbados was the first Caribbean island I decided to return to on the same day of our arrival.
